Terry Slack, cyclist

Your gear guide: A former Marine who entered his first triathlon as a cadet at Virginia Military Institute.

His picks: We know what you're thinking: $3,000 is a lot for a bike. But the two-wheel junkie knows his stuff; he's a salesman at Hawley's Bike World in Fayetteville. His Specialized Transition Comp is his triathlon ride and one of three bikes he owns. His Felt F-2 is his go-to road bike.

Where to go: Middle Road, near the Soffe plant, or on N.C. 87, where he has biked as far as Lumberton. He has done one Iron Man event, the Beach to Battleship in Wilmington. He can also be seen riding with his wife, Leigh-Ann, a doctor at Womack Army Medical Center, and their 2-year-old daughter, Leila Grace.
